CONSULTING EXPERIENCE

   Network/Systems Engineer

Consulted for Computer Solutions, Novato, CA as an Independent (ComputerConsultants) – Dec 2002 – Present  

   Provide consulting services for various businesses, which include hardware and software installation, configuration, upgrades, and problem resolution on Microsoft Windows XP/2000/NT/98/95, SUN Solaris and Linux networks. Perform network audits that are designed to help companies identify security issues and network design flaws. Provide initial and ongoing support, monitoring, and administration services to maintain optimal operation of these networks. Set up Internet connections using T1, Fractional T1, DSL, and ISDN technologies. Design and implement WANs using direct connections and the less expensive VPN and IPSec technologies. Offer advice on upgrade paths to improve network and computer performance to help customers keep up with the latest technology in a fiscally sound manner.

 

Network/Systems Engineer

Consulted for Bluetrain, Walnut Creek, CA as an Independent (ComputerConsultants) – Oct 2000 – Dec 2001  

   Cleaned up and maintained a network of Sun and NT(2000) boxes in Bluetrain’s cage located in Exodus’ s facility. Optimized their network by cleaning up the config of their Cisco routers and switches. Also reconfigured their HyperFlow, a load balancing/HA device, for optimal performance.  And lastly optimized the performance of their Netscreen firewalls. Setup various systems for Oracle databases and web servers. Also installed Sun Webtop (Starportal) in various configs from one machine to several. Installed several frame-relay connections, which connected all their California offices together. Help configured their Network Storage devices for disk sharing for an installation of Veritas Cluster Server.

 

Unix Operations

Consulted for Corporate Express in Broomfield, CO through TEK Systems December 1999 – March 2000

   This three month contract included duties such as supporting various HP boxes and Sun Enterprise boxes which included two Enterprise 10K’s which consisted of five domains each and four SSP’s. Supported a high volume backup system, utilizing two Quantum DLT7000 jukeboxes connected to the E10K’s via fiber, all run by Veritas Netbackup. Supported Unison Maestro, a batch job scheduler, and Dazel print and fax queues across all Unix boxes. Duties were assigned via Remedy, a helpdesk application in which management would create and assign projects. Network monitoring was performed by HP Openview, which could also automatically generate Service Desk tickets, which were assigned via Remedy. Projects included DNS maintenance and cleanup, shell scripting, and rolling out patches and software.

 

Network Engineer

Consulted for Colorado University, Boulder, UMS through Romac International September 1999 – December 1999

   On this three month contract responsibilities included supporting various Unix boxes including Sun Enterprise 10K and smaller Sun boxes, HP, and Digital Dec boxes. Maintained a production environment for a web based student registration application. The registration application consisted of multiple Unix boxes serving the application and load balanced through a dual Cisco Local Director configuration. Cleaned up the Local Director configuration and implemented the dual configuration. Also maintained a development environment for the same student registration application for approximately twenty-five developers on various platforms, which included Sun, HP, and Windows NT servers.  Supported a POP3 mail system and DNS running on Dec boxes. Implemented an IMAP mail system on the same Dec boxes. Was also responsible for supporting and maintaining various Netscape servers, which included Netscape Enterprise, Directory, and Collabora Servers. Implemented Apache web servers to cut down on the cost of Netscape Enterprise Servers. Implemented Bind v8 to run with a Windows 2000 test environment.

WORK EXPERIENCE

   Network/Systems Engineer

Bricsnet - FM, Novato, CA - June 2002 – Present

Hired as a part time employee to fulfill Bricsnet information technology needs. Maintain Linux, Solaris, and Windows workstations and servers. Migrated Windows NT domain to Windows 2000 Active Directory. Migrated Exchange 5 to Exchange 2000. Run nightly backup jobs using Veritas Backup Exec. Maintain hardware, software, and operating systems keeping patches up to date including virus protection. Perform day to day administrative functions for all servers and workstations. Ensure that security is maintained across the entire Bricsnet network.

 

Senior Network Engineer

Brightware, Inc., Novato, CA - April 1996 – September 2000

   Brightware was a fast paced and dynamic artificial intelligence software company.  Specializing in the fields of automated email answering and other web products designed for high traffic, service oriented web sites. I was hired as a Unix Systems Administrator but was promoted twice, once to Network Engineer and then onto Senior Network Engineer.

Brightware began as a small company of 25 persons and quickly grew to over 250 people.

   Built a network and system infrastructure of Unix and Windows based servers to keep up with the fast paced growth of the company. Unix servers included many flavors including SunOS, Solaris, IBM AIX, HPUX, and Linux. Most Internet services were run “in house” some of which included a web cluster of Cisco’s Local Director, Unix and Windows machines; a mail system which included Solaris and Exchange mail servers; DNS and many other servers. Built an infrastructure of dial-up and VPN technologies to support a large number of remote users. Built two different security domains; one using Solaris NIS+ and the other a Windows NT domain. Maintained the entire development environment for the development of Brightware’s core technologies.

   Perform proactive management of the network and servers to keep the total network running at its optimal performance. This was obtained through the use of network analyzers and monitoring tools such as HP Openview. For critical servers such as email and web other fault tolerant systems were implemented.       

   Supervise and mentored other network/Unix administrators. Gave them tasks to perform and monitor their work, to insure the highest quality and zero downtime.

 

Programmer Analyst

PMI Mortgage Insurance, San Francisco, CA - April 1995 – April 1996

   Unix system administration for a network of eight Sun Servers running Solaris 2.x. Duties included writing initialization scripts, backup, system recovery, hardware/software installation, user setup, NFS configuration, NIS/NIS+ configuration, network configuration, scripting in Borne, “C” shell, and C/C++.

   Sybase SQL and Replication server administration; SQL Server duties included server installation, backup, recovery, monitoring system status, and writing stored procedures. Replication Server duties included installation, backup, recovery, and monitoring system status.

   Windows NT Server/Workstation Administration; Duties include installation, hardware/software setup, RAS configuration, NTFS, network configuration, backup, recovery and user setup.

   Maintenance programming for a PowerBuilder underwriting mortgage insurance application; This PowerBuilder application utilizes a PowerBuilder front end running on Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, and Windows NT operating systems. This application also utilized a Sybase database running on Sun Servers. Duties included developing windows, data windows, PowerBuilder scripting, writing SQL, and stored procedures.

 
Junior Programmer Analyst

PMI Mortgage Insurance, San Francisco, CA - July 1994 – April 1995

   Provided technical support for customers using problem solving and communication skills.  Troubleshot problems on a variety of networking and computer platforms including WAN, LAN, AS400, Sun Workstations and PC based machines. Provided support for a wide range of applications from Microsoft applications to AS400 applications. Wrote testing programs in Borland C++ that were used to help debug and develop the latest version of AURA (Automated Underwriting Risk Analysis) for the AS400, PC-DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows NT operating systems.
